a big win for terrorism:

Wave the white flag--and Hizballah's

Israel and the West surrender to Hizballah.

Terrorists and the U.N. win.

Here are the depressing details:

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 Friday evening, calling for the cessation of hostilities between Hizbullah and Israel.
The resolution authorizes the deployment of 15,000 UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon to support a Lebanese force as it takes control of the region and Israel withdraws.

The UN force is to monitor the cease-fire and help Lebanese forces gain control over an area that has previously been under the de facto authority of Hizbullah. The resolution calls for the need for the "unconditional release" of the two IDF soldiers captured July 12, but does not make a direct demand for their freedom.

Additionally, it calls on Israel and Lebanon to agree to a long-term solution under which Hizbullah would be disarmed.

The text of the resolution does not specify under which chapter of the UN Charter the force would be authorized. Instead, it says the force's mandate includes several elements: monitoring the cessation of hostilities, accompanying Lebanese troops as they deploy and as Israel withdraws, and ensuring humanitarian access.

The UN force, known by its acronym UNIFIL, will help coordinate the deployment of Lebanese forces to the south.

Yeah, the same UNIFIL whose flag flies beneath Hizballah's.

"calling for a cessation of hostilities between Hizballah and Israel"? So the U.N. now addresses a terrorist organisation in the same terms as a sovereign state. This is a win for Hizballah, make no mistake.
No requirement that the two kidnapped soldiers be released. Just a "call for the need" to release them. What exactly does that mean? Pretty please, Mr. Terrorist sir, if you'd be so kind.....?
"Additionally, it calls on Israel and Lebanon to agree to a long-term solution under which Hizbullah would be disarmed."
There's already a longstanding U.N. resolution to that effect (R.1559?) and Lebanon has done nothing about it. Because Lebanon has neither the desire nor the muscle to do so. This part of the resolution is utterly meaningless and the parties to drawing up this resolution know that.
Disgusting and shameful. If Olmert caves in to this (and he will) Israel will remove the ineffectual fool and replace him with someone who has the necessary spine to stand up to the islamofascists.
Iran must be delighted. *spit*
I smell the influence of the slimeballs of the State Dept. in this. So much for Condi Rice and her commitment to the war on terrorism. She's captive to the appeasing Clinton-era Saudi-loving lefties who still wield enormous influence over American foreign policy in that Department.

UPDATE: UN rights council sets up probe of Israeli attacks in Lebanon

The UN Human Rights Council voted to set up a commission of inquiry into "systematic" Israeli attacks on civilians in Lebanon, despite fears that it could upset diplomatic moves to end the conflict.

Israel is going to entrust it's safety to these Jew haters? Hezb'Allah has been using women and children as human shields, holding whole towns hostage -- not allowing them to leave while they fire rockets into Israeli towns and cities. At the same time, Israel is dropping leaflets warning civilians to leave their homes, homes were Hezb'Allah is hiding their weaponry and the UN is probing Israel?
This is sick and twisted.
