Victoria Burns

Right now, smoke is blanketing Melbourne (literally), the air thick with the smell of Victoria’s burning high country.

Melbourne is a long, long way away from the fire front.

Firestorms on the move

Firestorms are expected to threaten townships near Victoria's high country today. After ripping through almost 150,000 hectares, the fires are gathering momentum as residents in north-eastern and eastern Victoria brace for the worst. Townships facing high fire risk include Kevington, Gaffneys Creek, Knockwood, A1 Mine Settlement, Cheshunt, Rose River, Tolmie and Whitfield.

With temperatures hitting the mercury in the high30s, coupled with a north-east to north-westerly wind, residents must face the reality that their homes could be lost.
My hat goes off to the CFA men out there now, battling this inferno - the worst fires in Victoria’s history.

This is looking very bad.
