Empty gestures & promises

LiveNews - Around 5,000 people are making their way down to Manly's North Steyne beach to form a giant human sign urging action on climate change. Clean Energy for Eternity is organising the sign which will be over 120 metres long and 35 metres wide. Organiser Derek Povel says the group's happy with the change in Canberra.. but more still needs to be done. “It’s great to be inside the tent in Bali for the Kyoto ratification, however I still think we need more as a nation.”

I hope they all walked there, unless this was just meant to be another useless, empty gesture. Speaking of empty promises and gestures.

News.com.au - Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said a transition bill would go to cabinet before Christmas and be presented to the opening of parliament next year, ending the ability of employers to make AWAs. But she conceded a second substantial piece of legislation reinstating unfair dismissal laws, delivering on the rest of Labor's election promise, would take longer. "We will get that into the parliament as soon as it can be done. We want to get the legislation right. The last thing we want to do with the substantial piece of legislation is do what the Howard government did with Work Choices, which is draft it poorly and amend it again and again and again. We want to get it right first time and take the time necessary to do that. But from that piece of legislation on, Work Choices will be over."

During the election campaign we were told working families were worse off, suffering under the heel of the Howard Junta, whingeing Wendy was whining at the price of groceries and interest rates. They showed us old ladies and grand parents worrying and neglected because of WorkChoices, and now we're getting excuses about getting it right? From the ALP website, I can see they've been railing against Workplace Relations since 2000.

I'm sure the 'unfair dismissal' laws she is banging on about, have been around for at least a year or so, so what exactly were Gillard & Co. doing at the time, instead of putting together alternate policy? I guess if you're dismissed, by those terrible bosses we hear about, from now until the ALP waffle off their asses, that's really sad and all that but tough, suck it up I guess. Your rights at work was back in November, it's December now and time to move on. I don't know PM Rudd, you may have given Deputy Gillard a bit too much to handle there.
