Why are we surprised at this?

The Australian - ONE in every 100 Australian babies is born with some degree of irreversible brain damage due to the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy, but many women continue to drink and doctors continue to ignore the problem, health experts warn. Society's blase attitude to drinking while pregnant in the face of the incurable nature of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and its capacity to leave children with permanent learning and behavioural problems is what worries organisations such as the Australian Drug Foundation, the Salvation Army and the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee. The most recent research, conducted late last year, revealed that 34 per cent of pregnant women consumed alcohol during their most recent pregnancy. And research earlier this year revealed that up to two million Australians were drinking at levels that risked brain damage.

Everywhere you turn, it's people boozing their lives down the crapper, no one can have fun without getting drunk as skunks these days, six, seven, ten beers/vodkas, men, women, hey it's all good folks. Who pays for all this, the drinker just pays in health, the good old push-over taxpayer picks up the rest usually, do what you want and we're surprised that pregnant women are consuming alcohol during their pregnancy? I heard on the radio today some of these organizations want warning labels put on bottles, like they do with cigarette packets, to try and warn pregnant women of the dangers of drinking alcohol whilst pregnant.

On the other side, women are told, it's your body, do with it as you feel, no one can tell you what to do with your body, if you fall pregnant; it's alright, accidents happen, like tripping over the pavement. Not to worry you can have an abortion, it's a woman's right and only her right, no one else has a say, especially not the poor thing getting the blade. Apologies for the graphic description, but that's what it is. I think it's really sick that we as a society think that it's alright for a woman to kill her unborn, yet we're all concerned and want to get all worked up with labels and warnings when she drinks and this causes brain damaged to the child. Gee folks, I'd have thought that being killed would be a far worse fate than being born with brain damage. Perhaps it's because you've been aborted, so you're not there to be seen, but if you're born with brain damage, you can be seen, bit harder to avoid I guess.

Now I'm not saying that's it's alright to drink whilst pregnant, I'm just saying that it's a bit screwed up to tell a woman, it's alright to kill her baby for the first couple of months of her pregnancy, I don't know exactly how many months, but they are told how wonderful it is and how it's a human right and all that, but if they drink whilst being pregnant, oh that's suddenly a big no-no. So don't be surprised if women, who are told it's alright to kill their unborn, then don't care much for their baby' health.
