Just say 'NO'!

SMH - It's billed as Australia's biggest under 18's event and its slogan is "this school holidays it's time to go wild". The Submission under-18s dance party at Home nightclub in Sydney's Darling Harbour lived up to its reputation last night, when five teenagers were arrested for assaulting police and drug possession, and a number of drunken girls had to be taken to hospital. [snip] At least one of the intoxicated girls who had to be taken to hospital was only 14 years old, say police. Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and charged after they allegedly assaulted a plain clothes police officer. [snip]

Another two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, were arrested after allegedly being caught with drugs. A 15-year-old boy was charged with possession of cannabis and ecstasy, while a 17-year-old boy was charged for a "deemed supply'' of ecstasy, which means he was carrying a quantity deemed big enough for supplying others. James McDougall, the Director of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre, said while he could not comment on this specific incident, the practice of taking sniffer dogs to pubs and clubs was concerning. "From a human rights perspective the use of sniffer dogs is questionable, the issue of them being used to police children is even more disturbing," he said.
Apart from the parents of these children, it seems to be there is a bit of a problem with folks like this McDougall, whining about human rights when sniffer dogs are being used to sniff out illegal drugs from underage children. Perhaps we should just cancel the dogs, the police and all that then, let em' run wild, I'm sure no drugs will make it in there then! I heard a parent earlier on the radio saying that oh, we can't hold the kids back from these things, can't wrap them in cotton wool, just try to educate them and trust them. Huh, when I was growing up you didn't get to go to dance parties till midnight and when you were 14, 15 or 16. My vital organs still managed to keep functioning, I must have missed the whole life-threatening episodes when our "human rights" were trampled in such a totalitarian fashion.

The way I see it folks, you simply don't allow your children to go to these sorts of events, you know there are drugs, booze and who knows what else going there. Even if you trust your children and they know all about the dangers of drugs, why tempt them unnecessarily. Children do not have the life experience that can help them avoid stupid decisions. It's just common sense, if you don't want to drink alcohol or become an alcoholic, you don't hang around at the pub all day do you. Besides if that father's child ended up in hospital or stabbed, I'm sure he'd be on the phone screaming for someone to do something! So parents, when the kids come nagging and whining and tell you how all the other kids blah blah, just say 'NO'.
