Baby race?

IRAN has started testing new uranium enrichment equipment that could double the capacity of its small research and development facilities, says the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei.

Those reports had prompted speculation that Iranian engineers had run into technical difficulties. But Dr ElBaradei said on Monday that "based on our most recent inspections, the second centrifuge cascade is in place and ready to go".

The US director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, believes Tehran is four to 10 years away from developing a weapon, even though its technology base is far more advanced than that of North Korea, which conducted a nuclear test 17 days ago.

Europe, China, Russia and the US have since been debating what sanctions, if any, should be imposed. China and Russia have resisted, and in a speech on Monday at Georgetown University's school of foreign service, Dr ElBaradei said sanctions were unlikely to work.

"Penalising them is not a solution," he said. "At the end of the day, we have to bite the bullet and talk to North Korea and Iran."

Dr ElBaradei said he was not persuaded, as US officials were, that Iran's ultimate goal was to build a weapon. But his agency's officials believe Iran wants to have all the major components of a weapon in hand so it could build one in weeks or months.

Yeah, when you and your allies have been threatened with mass murder and annihilation, you tend to be a little nervous and err on the side of caution. Let’s see if the good Doctor would be prepared to stand by his beliefs on Iran’s intentions, if we insisted on flaying the skin off his bum, if he is wrong.

But if all else fails, for Iran, that is, they also have the baby race.

IRAN'S President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has called for a baby boom to almost double the country's population to 120 million and enable it to "triumph" over the West.

Mr Ahmadinejad told MPs he wanted to scrap birth control policies that discourage Iranian couples from having more than two children. Women should work less and devote more time to their "main mission" of raising children, he said.

Usually this would have lefty feminists fleeing the room screaming and wailing hysterically, but I suppose since the dear leader is opposing that arrogant cowboy, they’ll take one for the team.

"I am against saying two children are enough," Mr Ahmadinejad said. "Our country has a lot of capacity. It has the capacity for many children to grow in it. It even has the capacity for 120 million people.

"Westerners have got problems. Because their population growth is negative they are worried and fear that if our population increases, we will triumph over them."

Do the math, a 120 million ignorant and poverty stricken people constantly told it is the fault of the great Satan and the wretched Jew and on the other side a diminishing population lacking the stomach to fight and hating itself.

Dismiss and ignore Steyn at your peril, Ahmadinejihad isn’t.
